Andrew McAfee says our future will feature "more and more technologies and fewer and fewer jobs." He says this is the best technological news and then explains why. His reasons are surprising.

Why Peer Review?
Why Peer Review?
"Writing is a social activity and this is why we peer review."
This brief video describes the greater purpose of peer review. After you have watched it, are you surprised by any of the ideas represented by the author of the video?

A Soviet Rosie?
I grew up seeing images of Rosie the Riveter everywhere. She was an emblem of female strength and was attractive. I understood later that our country needed women to work during World War II and that Rosie was an image that represented strong women contributing labor for the USA. I knew Rosie was a piece of propaganda for that time, but she continued to appeal to me.
What is a woman's strength, I wondered. Why did they need to promote women working? Why did Rosie look like that? I wanted to know the story of Rosie the Riveter.
A few years ago, I was in a bookstore in Moscow and found this postcard:
This Soviet woman reminded me of Rosie. What was her story? Is this image linked in some way to Rosie the Riveter? Is this image the Soviet version of Rosie?

On Grammar
Stephen Fry does not come to a conclusion one would expect. He indicates that very conclusion in his speech as a matter of fact. This is an example of how electric written words can be when paired with sound and of how delightful graphics can be.

You got that from YouTube? Awesome! Now, cite it. For real.
This is a great "edugraphic" about citing pieces in social media. Easy chart. Great use. I really like how we're supposed to cite a tweet. Can you guess why I like it?
Awesome edugraphic here.

Education--how we learn online...and in person
Daphne Koller represents the controversial company Coursera that brings courses from top colleges, for free, to the public. She says universities should offer this not only as a service, but as a way of understanding how people learn in "What We're Learning from Online Education."
Education--just two questions for us
And here's another TED talk about education.
Bill Gates asks us two questions in his talk "Mosquitos, Malaria, and Education."
Education--underrepresented populations
I'm on a TED talk obsession cycle again.
Bear with me. Here is one about education:
Freeman Hrabowski works to make sure underrepresented populations have the ability to get degrees in the sciences in "Four Pillars of College Success in Science."
What will future jobs look like?
This video is one of the many TED talks that contribute a great deal to our discussion as a nation. All of us will want to earn money in the future. What will it look like? Andrew McAfee offers a look at how technology will affect labor and asks us to reconsider how we think of money.

Thought
What do you think of this? In some ways, it's a map to thinking. You can find your location on any thought you have. In other ways, it's a goalsetter. We can move "up" and "down" that arrow as we need to.
What do you think?
You might have a knee-jerk reaction to that question. You might have a more cautious response to that question. Which do you think is really "thought"?

Welcome to Composition I!
Here you will be encouraged to develop your own knowledge. We all start with what we have. Where we go from there is up to each one of us.
What are you interested in? What intrigues you? What are you surprised by? What do you disagree with and why do you disagree? What do you agree with completely? What do you agree with, but wish to qualify?
What do you want to say? What have you read that matches or conflicts or expands on that idea? What answers do you have?
(The above image was borrowed long ago. Sadly, I do not have a source for it. If you, or someone you know either owns or produced this image, then please let me know so I can credit that person. Thanks.)
